Preparing for Cold and Flu Season

If your child has a fever, vomiting or diarrhea, please keep them at home. Handwashing, flu shots and proper technique when coughing or sneezing help reduce the spread of disease. Masking is also suggested when needed due to symptoms. Please reinforce these means of disease reduction with your children. We appreciate all your efforts in keeping the community healthy.

Resource | Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) cases are currently on the rise both in Illinois and across the nation. While Chicago Public Schools hasn’t seen an increase in the severity of the illness, it is still important to take steps to prevent its spread. It is a common illness that usually causes fever, sore throat, painful mouth sores that blister, and rash commonly found on the hands and feet. It is highly contagious and can spread quickly at schools and day care centers. Most children have mild symptoms for 7 to 10 days. Additionally, utilize the Sick Student Protocol for any students who appear ill upon returning to school. If a case is reported at your school, please fill out the Disease Reporting Form and work with your Disease Prevention and Response Specialist

Resource | Respiratory Illnesses

As we navigate through the cold and flu season, the Office of Student Health and Wellness (OSHW) would like to remind staff, students, and families of the importance of practicing good hygiene to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses within our school community. Guidance and resources on preventing the spread of respiratory illness can be found on the CPS Respiratory Illness Guidance website, including a flyer that can be shared school-wide. Additionally, please ensure the sick student protocol is followed for any students who appear ill upon returning to school.
